Early desk: The primary source of these tables is not identified for certain. Nevertheless, it is hypothesized that these tables were utilized in the edifying cultures of Greece and Rome. In those times, there were barely a few tables present for the reason that, very few had education back then. And those who received education were scholars and the rest were in the administrative section.
These tables were majorly used for the purpose of writing. But, a few desks were custom-made and they had a large number of drawers for storing books and hand-written manuscripts. The only disadvantage that these kinds of tables had was that they were very big in size.
Secretary desk: The secretary tables are particularly well-known for convenience of the many drawers incorporated in them. These tables were very tall, almost as high as seven feet, and had a unique shape. The desk narrowed down at the upper end, while the surface at the upper side is hinged in such a manner that it forms an angle when closed. Slant top desk: This kind of table is very much similar to a secretary desk. However, it is not hinged at the top surface. The slant top desk is also referred to as a bureau desk. With the absence of the top hutch, this desk is much lighter and more convenient to manage. Also, it occupies lesser space than the secretary desk as it is smaller in size and is usually considered to be the predecessor of the secretary desk.
The major disadvantage with each of the desks mentioned above is that they occupy a very large workspace and leave no room for other things; if you work area is small. However, they are still opted as they enable you to keep your office or your work area more tidy. While a few people use these comfortably for writing, others use them as display pieces.
